Getting the Carolina Digital Repository Ready for NIH Data

In January 2023, the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Data Management and Sharing Policy, which promotes data sharing in open access repositories, went into effect. This policy has the potential to have great impacts on the repository ecosystem as depositors search for appropriate places to deposit their research data that meet the NIH’s guidelines. The NIH has provided a list of desirable characteristics for data repositories which it asks depositors to consider when selecting a repository.
In this presentation, I will discuss the enhancements that we made to the Carolina Digital Repository (CDR), UNC-Chapel Hill’s Hyrax-based institutional repository, to prepare it for an anticipated influx of data. Additionally, I will show how the CDR now meets the NIH’s desired characteristics for repositories. I will also discuss documentation that I have created and outreach to other library departments to raise awareness of the Carolina Digital Repository’s data service offerings.

Commercial Collaboration: How Commercial Companies can Support Samvera

Commercial companies like ]u[ Ubiquity can play a pivotal role in bolstering open-source communities like Samvera. By focusing on improvements, bug fixes and developments that arise from real-world use cases from clients, we can focus resources, expertise and time into the development and enhancement of Samvera’s projects - and contribute the code back to the open-source community. Collaboration between commercial entities and open-source projects like Samvera fosters innovation, accelerates development, and widens the reach of valuable tools for a diverse range of users. This lightning talk demonstrates how the support and involvement of commercial entities who share the same values as Samvera can be beneficial to the project, the company, and the open-source community as a whole, including some brief examples of ]u[ Ubiquity’s contributions and potential future focuses.

Scaling Up: How we pushed our Digital Collections application into production

This lightning talk will discuss problems we were having with derivatives in our Hyrax-based application Digital Collections, and what we did to fix them. We faced two simultaneous problems as we scaled up the application into production mode: we were using too much local disk space, and our ingest process was too slow to work in full production mode. The first problem was solved by moving our derivatives out of Fedora, while also moving them onto a different file storage platform. The second problem was solved by switching to an in-house ingest process that was already working for several other production services. We'll discuss the details of these two solutions, and how they helped us move our application into full production mode.
